Michael Capek is a family doctor, but one with a significant difference. Dr Capek specialises in conditions which have not responded to standard medical treatments, especially conditions relating to mental illness. Medical hypnosis is among the techniques that he uses to treat his patients.
After graduating from Leeds Medical School in 1979, Dr Capek passed his MRCGP in 1983. He also completed an MSc in Health Psychology from City University in 1997. With 32 years’ experience as a principal in general medical practice, Dr Capek’s work these days deals with patients whose conditions require something a little out of the ordinary when it comes to treatment.
Many of these patients have medically inexplicable conditions which are not being helped by standard treatments. These are often long-term conditions which require careful management. Many of them have proved too complex for other practitioners to deal with.
Based in Manchester, Dr Capek’s main treatment technique is medical hypnosis. He sees his treatment methods as teaching patients a life skill, on which they can rely in future, in situations where they do not have access to a therapist. He does not see himself as dispensing a cure from on high but rather working with the patient, and guiding them to help themselves.
Hypnotherapy, for Dr Capek, is about putting the patient in control. All of us have the potential to use hypnotherapy as a tool to improve our health. For those who have reached what looks like a dead end when it comes to dealing with a troubling condition, Dr Capek might just be the man who can bring relief.
